The roots of Barrington Brown's leather provider, Conceria Tempesti in Italy, stretch back over a hundred years to when Giovanni Tempesti first learnt the ancient craft of tanning. His sons began the current company, and under the expert guidance of his grandchildren Giovanni and Giovanna it has become one of Italy’s leading vegetable tanneries.
Vegetable tanning is the oldest form of tanning in the world and the leathers are made using only natural minerals and vegetable-tanning agents. This historic process produces a much more environmentally friendly leather, renowned for more natural animal characteristics than chrome-tanned leathers.
The Tempesti philosophy is to use innovative technology along with the best artisan tradition, to produce high quality leather famous for incomparable naturalness and softness.
Tempesti’s respect for nature led it to be a founding member of Il Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale, a consortium of 22 Tuscan tanneries which share the same passion for vegetable tanning. The consortium acts as guarantor and ambassador for the excellence of Tuscan leather throughout the world.
For our Evening Wallet we use Tempesti’s flagship product, Elbamatt. This is an aniline leather which is dyed with only soluble dyes, to show the hide’s natural grain. It exposes more of the animal’s skin texture and gives wonderful colour variation.
